We know it can be challenging producing work in isolation and believe joining forces and supporting others can result in a stronger, more efficient sector.
This page is dedicated to the resources for producers we have put together working on various projects. We will keep adding to it when more resources are available.
Circus Producers Network (UK)
We have set up and host the first UK network specifically for independent producers and self-producing artists working across contemporary circus, dance and theatre in the subsidised arts sector.
This network is a space for independent producers to connect, share information and resources, build new national connections and reduce the isolation of doing it all alone.
Whether you are an independent producer or self-producing artist, this is a network of professional peers up for answering questions, lending an ear and sharing approaches to making great work happen.
Practical Guide to Brexit
We were commissioned by XTRAX to produce an informative guide for touring post-Brexit.
The digital guide is for companies, artists and festivals and aims to offer advice and some clarity on how to prepare to work internationally in 2021 and beyond. It covers a wide range of topics, including:
Administrative impact: contracts, tax, insurance, EU funding
Movement of people: Visas, passports, ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), sponsorship licence and accessibility
Movement of goods and vehicles: Export and imports, EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification), ATA carnet, driving licences, creative freight solutions
Touring: impact and landscape, working with agents, budgeting
Given the ambiguous timeline and outcome of the Brexit deal, this guide cannot be conclusive, but points toward a likely direction. This guide will continue to evolve as more information becomes available. We invite you to come back to it in the next weeks and months, as we continue updating when information is shared by the British Government.
We hope you will find this guide helpful and that it will become part of your toolbox to navigate EU touring over the next few months.
COVID-19 protocol for the circus sector
The Circus Change UP Covid Working Group, led by Split Second’s Kevin Wratten and Di Robson, wrote a document which imparts advice and support on mitigating risks to enable artists and companies to get back to work safely.
The Covid-19 protocol highlights key areas that the working group and its conveners feel must be considered when you or your company create a bespoke protocol or implementation document.
The advice and information in the protocol applies to everyone in the sector but it is recognised that individual artists contracting to or working across a number of contracts face different challenges.
Focal Point Labs are focused professional development sessions to develop new skills to adapt to current challenges.
Delivered by industry professionals, these free Labs connect producers and creatives alike to build relevant skills for future projects. After each event, we put together a list of additional resources.
So far we have covered:
Producing With Care - mental health and wellbeing practices to care for yourself and others through these challenging times. See the resource list here.
Future Touring Landscape - COVID-19 working practices and EU touring post Brexit. See the resource list here.
Producing for Digital Context - What are the differences between producing ‘live’ work and ‘digital’ work?. See the resource list here.

“Just thanks - I've been feeling quite empty of creativity and just having thoughts and ideas to infuse that at the moment was so restorative.”

Producing Resources
We support the development of new producers and self-producing artists through sharing practice and resources and demystifying the producing process.
Over the years, we have fine-tuned our own set of tools and templates for producing and touring work: budget and contract templates, marketing plans, tour packs, etc. We are currently developing a set of Split Second producing resources, which will be shared with artists and companies.
If you are interested in accessing these resources, get in touch outlining what would be helpful and we will get back to you.
